A Difficult Childhood
Meat Loaf was born Marvin Lee Aday on September 27, 1947, in Dallas, Texas. His father was an alcoholic and abusive, and his mother was a waitress who struggled to make ends meet. Meat Loaf was often left alone to fend for himself, and he developed a rebellious streak at a young age.
Meat Loaf's parents divorced when he was 10 years old, and he went to live with his mother. But his mother's new husband was also abusive, and Meat Loaf ran away from home at the age of 15.
Meat Loaf spent the next few years living on the streets of Los Angeles. He worked odd jobs to make ends meet, and he often slept in his car. During this time, Meat Loaf developed a drug addiction, and he also struggled with depression.
A Break In Music
In 1971, Meat Loaf met the songwriter Jim Steinman. Steinman had written a rock opera called "Bat Out of Hell," and he was looking for a singer to perform it. Meat Loaf auditioned for the role, and he was immediately cast.
"Bat Out of Hell" was a huge success, and it launched Meat Loaf's career. He went on to release a number of other successful albums, including "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" and "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)."
But Meat Loaf's personal life continued to be troubled. He struggled with drug addiction and depression, and he also had a number of failed relationships.
A Troubled Life
In 1993, Meat Loaf was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He was also suffering from the effects of his drug addiction and his unhealthy lifestyle.
Meat Loaf's health problems continued to worsen in the years that followed. He had a number of heart surgeries, and he also suffered from kidney failure.
In 2022, Meat Loaf died at the age of 74. He left behind a legacy of music that will continue to be enjoyed by fans for years to come.
