The Civil Rights Movement was a long and difficult struggle for equality and justice for African Americans in the United States. It began in the Reconstruction Era after the Civil War, when African Americans were granted citizenship and the right to vote. However, these rights were often denied in practice, and African Americans continued to face discrimination and violence.

In the early 20th century, the Civil Rights Movement began to gain momentum. Leaders such as W.E.B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, and Martin Luther King Jr. worked to raise awareness of the plight of African Americans and to fight for their rights. The movement achieved a number of important victories, including the passage of the Brown v. Board of Education decision in 1954, which outlawed segregation in public schools.

The Civil Rights Movement reached its peak in the 1960s. In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. In 1964, the Civil Rights Act was passed, which outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. In 1965, the Voting Rights Act was passed, which prohibited racial discrimination in voting.

The Civil Rights Movement was a major turning point in American history. It helped to end segregation and discrimination, and it paved the way for greater equality and justice for all Americans.
