Early Life and Career
Ronnie Garvin was born on October 28, 1950, in Tampa, Florida. He began his wrestling career in 1976, competing in various independent promotions throughout the southeastern United States. In 1979, he joined the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA),where he quickly rose through the ranks.
NWA World Heavyweight Championship
In 1981, Garvin won the NWA World Heavyweight Championship from Ric Flair in a controversial match. The victory made Garvin the first African American to hold the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. However, Garvin's reign was short-lived, as he lost the title back to Flair just two months later.
World Championship Wrestling
In 1987, Garvin joined World Championship Wrestling (WCW). He quickly became one of the most popular wrestlers in the company, feuding with the likes of Ric Flair, Sting, and The Four Horsemen. In 1988, he won the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship from Mike Rotundo.
Later Career and Retirement
Garvin continued to wrestle for WCW throughout the early 1990s. He eventually left the company in 1995 and began working on the independent circuit. He retired from wrestling in 2004.
Legacy
Ronnie Garvin was one of the most popular and successful wrestlers of the 1980s and 1990s. He was known for his intense promos, his signature finishing move, the Scorpion Deathlock, and his enigmatic personality. Garvin was a pioneer for African American wrestlers, and he helped to pave the way for future generations of wrestlers.
