Early Life and Education
Jane Wood Reno was born on July 21, 1938, in Miami, Florida. Her father was a newspaper editor and her mother was a schoolteacher. Reno attended Cornell University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry in 1960. She then attended the University of Miami School of Law, where she earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1963. After graduating from law school, Reno served as a law clerk for Judge William O. Mehrtens of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
Career in Law
In 1964, Reno joined the Miami-Dade County State Attorney's Office as an assistant state attorney. She quickly rose through the ranks and in 1978, she was elected as the first woman State Attorney for Miami-Dade County. As State Attorney, Reno was known for her tough stance on crime. She also implemented a number of innovative programs, including a drug court and a domestic violence unit.
In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed Reno as the first female Attorney General of the United States. As Attorney General, Reno oversaw a number of high-profile cases, including the Waco siege and the Oklahoma City bombing. She also implemented a number of reforms, including a new policy on the use of deadly force by law enforcement officers.
Career in Politics
After leaving office in 2001, Reno returned to Florida and taught law at the University of Miami School of Law. She also served on a number of boards and commissions, including the National Domestic Violence Hotline and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
In 2002, Reno ran for Governor of Florida, but she was defeated in the Democratic primary by Bill McBride. She remained active in politics, however, and in 2008, she campaigned for Barack Obama in the presidential election.
Personal Life
Jane Reno never married and had no children. She was a lifelong Episcopalian and was known for her strong faith. Reno was also a devoted animal lover and had a number of pets, including dogs, cats, and rabbits.
Death and Legacy
Jane Reno died on February 7, 2016, at the age of 78. She died at her home in Miami, Florida, after a long illness. Reno was remembered as a trailblazing figure in American law and politics. She was a dedicated public servant who made a lasting impact on the lives of countless Americans.
