Capture and Imprisonment
Shallman was working in India in 1955 when he was lured into East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) by a double agent. He was then captured by the Russians and taken to Siberia, where he was held in a prison camp. The conditions in the camp were harsh, and Shallman was subjected to torture and interrogation.
The Escape Plan
Despite the challenges, Shallman never gave up hope of escape. He spent years planning and preparing, and he eventually convinced several other prisoners to join him in a daring breakout.
The escape plan was meticulously executed. The prisoners used tools that they had fashioned from everyday objects to dig a tunnel out of the camp. They then made their way through the frozen wilderness, evading Russian patrols and enduring extreme cold and hunger.
The Journey Home
After weeks of travel, Shallman and his fellow escapees reached the border of Iran. They were finally free from their Russian captors, but their journey was far from over.
Shallman and his companions traveled through Iran and Turkey, and they eventually made their way to Europe. They arrived in the United States in 1962, seven years after their capture.
