In 1848, Stanford heard about the California Gold Rush, and he decided to seek his fortune in the West. He traveled to California by ship, and he arrived in San Francisco in 1849. Stanford initially worked as a miner, but he soon realized that there was more money to be made in supplying miners with goods and services.

In 1852, Stanford opened a general store in Sacramento, California. The store was successful, and Stanford quickly became one of the wealthiest men in the city. He also became involved in politics, and he was elected to the California State Assembly in 1855.

Governor of California

In 1861, Stanford was elected Governor of California. He served as governor for four years, and during that time he oversaw the construction of the transcontinental railroad. The railroad was a major undertaking, and it helped to connect California to the rest of the United States.

As governor, Stanford was also a strong advocate for education. He helped to establish the University of California, Berkeley, and he donated land for the construction of Stanford University.

Founder of Stanford University

After leaving office as governor, Stanford devoted his time to the establishment of Stanford University. He and his wife, Jane Lathrop Stanford, founded the university in 1885. Stanford University is one of the world's leading research universities, and it has played a major role in the development of Silicon Valley.

Legacy

Leland Stanford died in 1893, but his legacy continues to this day. Stanford University is a major center of learning and research, and it has produced some of the world's most influential leaders.
