What is Knight Challenge?

Knight Challenge is a national initiative by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation that invests in bold ideas that use digital media to strengthen communities. Since its launch in 2012, Knight Challenge has funded over 100 projects that have helped to create more informed and engaged citizens, build stronger civic networks, and improve the quality of life in communities across the country.

How does Knight Challenge work?

Knight Challenge is a two-stage competition. In the first stage, applicants submit a brief proposal outlining their idea. A panel of judges reviews the proposals and selects a small number of finalists to receive a $30,000 grant to develop their ideas further. In the second stage, the finalists submit a full proposal and a panel of judges selects the winners, who receive grants of up to $1 million to implement their projects.

What types of projects does Knight Challenge fund?
